12997 Tue, 04 Apr 2000 01:11:27 -0700 Hankscraft gear-motor score? beam@corp.sgi.com Ken Hill Get a couple Hankscraft gearmotors REAL CHEAP. Anyone have any experience
using them for BEAM apps? These are surplus. Made to run on 2 D
cells. Turn about 30 RPM a 3 vts. from 2 AAs, about 60 RPM at 6 vts from 4
AAs. Real quiet and smooth. Reversible and seem very efficient. Turning
as a generator they will run up the meter to 10 vts. (if that's any
indication) and will coast after power is removed for a time.
Only catch is their size - about 1.5 inch dia. x 1.5 long less mounting
flanges which adds another half inch to the width.
At Edmond Scientific they cost $22 each and come in various RPMs and volts
ratings. These I received don't list either spec on the case, but I ran
them at 6 vts for a long time without noticing any heat buildup.
I found them accidently at MECI electronics:
http://www.meci.com/results.cgi?isbn+650-0671
Their catalog lists them for $2.99 - Online it says only $1.99! Plus you
get those cool bonus parts! The battery holder can be removed and leads
can be soldered on the massive terminals.
Be warned! There's the catch with this company. First, they didn't fill my
online order (too lazy I think) and I had to call them and they gave me a
lame excuse. Next they screwed up my order (I never even ordered these so
if they hadn't, I'd never have known about them) Also they charge a $10.95
handling charge for any size order and a bogus sales tax I think :(
Here's the URL for the manufacturer specs on this motor series:

Good luck, Ken
