Subject: [alt-beam] Re: Almost Complete Walker

Spencer,

He says thanks.

As to pictures, I am trying to get a friend that has a good camera to
come over and take some shots on all the robots Kyle has made, but it
seems he has been out of town for a while. In a few weeks I hope to have
some pictures ready--just can't figure out where to spend them yet. A
number of people have offered to put them on the web for us so far.

The basic run down of construction:

2 tower servo's (of Solarbotics Fame, Kyle did the hack all on his own)
One is mounted straight down for push and the front is at about a 35-40
degree angle.

The complete walker circuit and two H-bridges (Beam online) on pref.
board and a tactile sensor very similar to the one you can order form
Solarbotics the spring type.

Power supply, well ahh... Hmm... Well, he is using Pure Energy AA
rechargeables, two only. They are so cheap when on sale at Walmart that
I gave in. The better NiCds are a little expensive.

The body (frame), everyone can laugh if they want to, is the base of a
CHUBB motion sensor with slots cut in to help support the servo's--not
pretty, but it is strong.

His first set of legs were jumbo paper clips, but those are slowly
bending so we have to redo the legs. A few people have e-mailed ideas,
but it will have to wait for the weekend (Bedtime sucks, as Kyle would
say!).

The next walker is a while off now, he is going to work backwards for a
while and see if he can improve his design skills by copying some of the
robots he has seen on the web of late.

Regards,
Dave
