That is the basics? Wow! Ok, I am far from an expert,
but this is one thing that even I can have an opinion
on. Here's a breakdown of features seen/needed.

Resistance: Needed! No question about it.

Voltage: Needed! No question about it.

Current: Needed! No question about it.

Capacitance/Inductance: True, it gets annoying when
you can't read the markings (I've sent two messages to
this list asking about strange caps), but it's not
necissary. It could come in handy for the lazy, or the
disk caps (electrolytic seem to be more standard in
markings)

Diode Scale: Not even sure what this is! Connect a
diode to a resistor and a power source, and measure
voltage across it. Hook it in reverse. From this you
can get all the info you need about a diode, even if
it is Zener or not. Don't see why you would NEED it.

HFE: Can be found with a simple (7 components for a
NPN transistor) circuit, and a current meter. Could be
handy so that you don't have to make calculations
constantly and hooking up the circuit. While we're on
the topic, you can tell a NPN from a PNP with a
continuity checker even!

In short, most of the 'features' are just time savers.
The basics (Volts, Ohms, Amps) are the only REAL
necessities that I know of. The rest can be VERY
usefull, it all depends on what you plan on doing
inbetween now and the time you replace (if ever) and
how much money you are willing to part with.

Thank you for listening to my rantings, hopefully they
were usefull.

That is what I have heard, but I know that there are those out
there that have walkers that are more than that. I know that mine is more
than 30, but it walks fine, and has enough of power. You might also want
to try looking at the camera repair shops for motors+gearboxes from dead
cameras. The motors and gearbox are very compact and easy to mount to a
frame.
