The emitter is the side with the arrow. NPN transistors have the arrow Not
Pointing iN - it points outwards not inwards.
In the FRED circuit, the emitters are tied to either the positive or
negative rail.

Tyou can try adding another solar engine off the same cap - the side with
less light will fire first. Or you can take the whole shebang out into
sunlight and make sure that the FLED is illuminated fully. This should
stop the solar engine from firing. Take it inside, and the motor should
whiz away at a vast rate of knots!

I can't think of any way that it wouldn't respond to light. If the motoor
spins when it should then the FLED is working, and all FLEDs are sensitive
to light.
