I haven't used them but if the characteristics (particularly the leakage
current, internal resistance) are OK, they should work fine. They were
the first types to be manufactured. Radial types are now preferred for
their small foot print on the PCB - you know; real estate. Radials are
(probably) also better off with vibrations. Shorter leads = more
strength also no lead bending required. I have seen some bulky axial
caps secured to the PCB using blobs of silicon cement (and sometimes
with cable ties) but not radials. Some of those big, so called computer
grade radials come with screws for mounting strength though.

the one with the arrow going to it? The collector I'm guessing...I got the
motor to go..but I don't the SE is working. I don't know how to test if the
FLED is responding to light or not....when it's breadboarded....
Thanx.

11976 Thu, 16 Mar 2000 15:06:55 -0800 [alt-beam] Gear motor report alt-beam@egroups.com Ken Hill

format="flowed"
Just received a couple $7 gear motors from Electronic Goldmine. They are
the ones that have a hand crank for use as a toy generator. Come in a
kit. Throw in the plastic gears and pop the case together, and pop in the
motor.
They use a hex drive shaft. (easy to attach to with collar). Shaft runs at
about 30 RPM no load from a 1.5 vt AA bat. Seems like LOTS of
torque. Couldn't stop it by squeezing the shaft with fingers.
Gears are noisy at no load, but quieted down with some load
resistance. Under "finger" load, it draws about 100 ma from the AA
bat. About half that no load.
Here's the link:

They also have pager motors for $2 each. Haven't played with these yet and
have nothing to compare results too anyway. Anyone know if these are junk
or just a really good deal?

11977 Thu, 16 Mar 2000 14:55:08 -0800 [alt-beam] BEAMLAND update.. "'beam@sgiblab.sgi.com'" "Feser, Jason" The botcam has been up and running again after some problems with my isp and
webspace provider. Check it out if you're interested. There are 5
photovores and a symet popping around looking for food as I write this...
Now to the heart of the matter - the upcoming contest cosponsored by
Solarbotics...
Due to underwhelming response, I think I'm probably going to shelve this
one. I've had positive response from about 5 people, of which 3 are willing
to send bots. This is unfortunate, but with the problem of shipping bots,
I can understand why people are not too keen on the idea. Oh well, you can
still watch my bots boogie around.
If any of you that were interested still want to send their bots - feel
free. I'd love to see how my bots interact with others.
Again, its too bad - it was a great idea (thanks again Richard) and one that
would have been a lot of fun for all of us.
