Hi, Mike. If you want good phototropic response (turn toward/away from
light), what you really need to do is:
a) make sure overhead light doesn't shine directly on the
photodiodes (it often overwhelms them).
b) turn them so they are not pointing parallel to each other. This
will make your robot lock onto a bright light source more easily.
For a photovore where you are trying to power your robot from the
light, you want the maximum light shining on your collectors; this
usually means NOT sheilding them from overhead light.

on these (or if they even exist), I'd like to know. The female connector
does exist, cause there's one in my Macintosh, but I don't know about
the male connector. I've been sending e-mails and forms to places around
the net, asking for info, so I'll just copy the info I sent out to those
companys to the lists. Hope someone can help!
Product 1
1/8 inch diameter
3/4 inch long
Male "earphone" style plug
4 conductor
(ring|ring|ring|tip)
Stereo version of mono microphone connector found in all Plaintalk
microphones for Apple Macintosh computers. Includes the 3 standard
contacts of a standard audio jack, but also has a 4th conductor that
provides power for the circuitry in the apple microphone.
Product 2
A female 4 conductor microphone jack that accepts both standard stereo
and mono "earphone" style male plugs, as well as the rarer 3/4 inch
long, 1/8 inch diameter 3 (or 4?) conductor mono male jacks used with
Apple Macintosh Plaintalk Microphones.
The products I am seeking are audio plugs, _SIMILAR_ to earphone style
plugs, but _LONGER_. A standard earphone style plug is 1/8 inch in
diameter, and 1/2 inch long. They come in 2 and 3 conductor versions for
mono and stereo.
The products I need are different. They too are 1/8 inch in diameter.
The female socket accepts standard earphone size jacks (1/8Dx1/2L), but
it also accepts another, longer connector that is 3/4 inch long. Apple
microphones are powered devices. They need a pin on the connector to
provide electricity for the circuitry. In order to make the connector
compatible with other audio sources, and not blow anything, they use a
longer plug, and use an extended tip to draw power. Apple's microphone
is only 3 conductors. the two audio chanels are tied into a mono input,
but I need a Stereo input, that also provides power. As a result, I am
in need of a 4 conductor jack that provides Ground, the TWO stereo audio
lines, as well as the power supply. I need a male and female connector.
All the female connectors are 4 conductors. The male jacks I've ever
seen are all 3 conductors, since that's all their microphones require,
being mono. Typicaly, stereo inputs are line level, from other devices,
and rarely require the power connector. Again, only 3 conductor, but
standard short connector. I am not certain if the product(s) I am in
need of even exist, or at least are even avaliable, but I need to ask. I
need to create an AV switching console, however, I need the Apple mic to
plug into an Apple 3/4 inch long 1/8 inch diameter 4 conductor female
jack (which can be salvaged off a damaged Macintosh logic board if I
become desparate), and also have RCA and standard 1/2"x1/8" audio in,
but the cable leading to the computer must be 4 conductor. It's the only
way this will work. I need the 3 conductors for ground and the two
stereo lines for the RCA and 1/2"x1/8" jacks, but I also need the power
pin that is only accessible via the long 3/4 inch jack. The only option
is a 4 conductor 3/4 inch 1/8 inch diameter male audio jack.
I hope you can help in finding what I need!
