You got it exactly. Pager motors are very low on torque (their ability to
turn stuff), but high on the rotational speed. So to get any useful work
out of them, we use the tubing to make the motor shaft act as a tiny
diameter wheel, which it has less problem spinning (at high speeds).

Dave

(hehe) anyways, i finnally gotten all the final planning down for the specs on this bot. I'm going to use a heavy gauge wire to make two legs, that space about 3 in. apart and 1 in. out. I'm gonna mount the solenoids on the ends of these. This way the bot will drag its butt (cap) forward by pulling itself with the legs. i'll glue the center of the harness (legs) on top of the 100k potetiometer, that will hold its head up. This should work out cool because now i can mount the solenoids at a 45 degree angle and not have to worry about tipping (wider is better) because of the 3in wide harness. The solenoid itself, unfortunately, should be a pull, thats okay. I can mount the solenoid in backwards, and make a special armature attachment that will extend from the armature to the back of the solenoid, this will simulate a push solenoid. Hopefully i should have the parts by the end of this week, possibly, and finish the bot by the w!
eek after. total coolness. Keep on BEAMin!

Try Solar-botics. Are you looking for a 3.5 6 mA kind?
Or a 2.7 16 ma one?

THat sounds easy. What brand of motor? Namiki?
It include pcb and solar panel?
THanks for the help! Looks like I might get into BEAM after all.

Exactly.

You can, however, use an idler wheel between the motor shaft and the
ground. This does not change the overall mechanical ratio, but it does
provide you with a wheel that can roll over cracks and uneven surfaces.
See attached.

Typically, the motors are mounted on the robot frame with the shafts
parallel to the ground. The wheels are mounted on small pivot arms, so
the motor shafts are pressing down on top of them. This is quite
different from mounting the wheels ON the motor shafts.

Steve Bolt has used this arrangement on a number of his robots. Look at

http://www.xs4all.nl/~sbolt/Other/suneater.html

Bruce
