try...
http://rsphysse.anu.edu.au/~rwb112/SP3/Helen/edu/sol_page/solenoid.html
and look at this page to see some common (not really usable for BEAM) for a
idea of what you see everyday...

hope this helps,

10171 Sun, 13 Feb 2000 15:20:20 -0700 [alt-beam] Did I mention the BEAM workshops? beam@sgiblab.sgi.com Dave Hrynkiw We've been getting some requests about workshops lately, and I just wanted
to mention to the list that:
The annual LANL workshop is a go for early May (tentatively the 4-7th).
Contact Paul Argo (pargo@lanl.gov) for registration information.
The Telluride Academy is hosting a variety of BEAM workshops in Montana
this Summer (Early July). For full info, check out the catalog at
http://www.solarbotics.com/workshop-telluride2000.shtml.
We're also doing workshops on the first day of the BEAM/WCRG Millennium
Games this summer (July 9, 10, 11). Basic/Intermediate classes using our
products. We'll have more info on the http://www.robotgames.com
website
pretty soon.
There. Dat all.
Nothing yet to announce on the Hextile project, but we'll be compiling the
info in the next week or two.
Regards,
Dave

"Um, no - that's H,R,Y,N,K,I,W. No, not K,I,U,U, K,I,_W_. Yes,
that's right. Yes, I know it looks like "HOCKYRINK." Yup, only
2 vowels. Pronounciation? _SMITH_".

10172 Sun, 13 Feb 2000 17:36:46 EST [alt-beam] Cool Idea Answers beam@sgiblab.sgi.com BUDSCOTT@aol.com A solenoid is a small cylinder that has an electro-magnetic coil that push
out or pulls in a small armature. I plan on mounting these so that the
solenoid will push the photovore forward. So, to answer that question, i will
not mount them like the pager motors. I will mount them so the run along side
the cap.

NOTE: Pardon the poor quality ASCII art
This will pop the robot up in the air and push it forward, or so i hope. I
had the idea because I know that it will only take a small burst of voltage
to "pop" the solenoid this 'theoretically' could make the robot travel
further in the short bursts, especially if i used small caster wheels. maybe.
If anybody has had experience working with solenoids, i'd appreciate their
input on my hypothosis, i could be greatly mistaken on how well solenoids
would work under this application. Thanks a ton, hope I answered your
questions cause you've answered mine! Keep on BEAMin'!

kinda rare.
