Subject: [alt-beam] 74x240 question
All,
I have been experimenting with a 74HC240, and I can't get the chip to drive
a pager motor directly even with three outputs ganged together.
I've seen this done with 74AC240, I was just wondering if anyone had done
this with a 74HC240 at all?
I like HC because of the low current consumption (I'm making a photovore).
How does the current consumption of AC compare to HC? I guess I'll have to
use driver transistors anyway, because Dick Smith doesn't stock any AC
chips.
I noticed in wilf's 240 uCore schematic that he used HC, which is why I
thought that I might be able to use pager motors with two outputs ganged up
together.
Any ideas?
thanks,
Ben

Maybe you could find a second-hand shop and pick up a digital watch for next
to nothing. Electronic organisers would be good as well.

If you were trying BEAM Online's link to the "Richfiles", it is a broken
link. The URL to Richard's site is:

There ya go.

Oops, do I feel silly.
I just realized that just yesterday Bob posted the URL to his site in the
"Symet Question" thread. hehe. 8)

I simply used a pair of wire cutters and cut it just off center as not to
damage the shaft ~ it is a verry brittle metal and will "Snap" offf with a
little pressure ~ then what remained I put the wire cutters behind the weight
and the motor housing and gently closed the cutters to PRY it off ~ worked
well for me with no noticable damage to the motor ~ however ` other
manufatures weights may be a little different ~

Hi, Ben. Are you ganging 3 drivers on the same chip, or stacking 3
chips, pin for pin.
> How does the current consumption of AC compare to HC?
HC AC
Max Quiescent supply 4 uA 8 uA (per package)
DC output current 35 mA 50 mA (per pin)
About twice: HC is at 6 V, AC is at 5.5 V.

Hi Ben.
I am doing this with a HC chip for my PSH right now. I have use the spare three
inverters to drive the motor directly. Hell i even drive one of dickies 1.5 -
3.0 volt motors directly too (not quite as fast as the pager mind you). I have
just wired the three inputs and outputs in paralell on each side of the chip
(See attached image).
Works like a charm and i am not even using really efficient pager motors
either.
