Yep, if you are looking for a great little rover/photovore it's very hard to
beat the BEAMant. Justin's component choices are very good in all light
levels, and if you are daring, you can replace the photobridge and coupling
resistors with trim pots for tweaking purposes. I'll give an example of the
versatility of the BEAMant. I just got back from the Robot Rally in Atlanta.
I entered Scarlet (a BEAMant rover) into the open competition. I didn't
expect to win anything and really couldn't concentrate on the competition
because of all of the interest in my display table. I mean, I was hoarse from
answering so many questions. Anyway, Scarlet won 3rd place! It actually beat
out bots that cost 2-3000 dollars to build and Scarlet was more functional. I
have exactly $19.50 in Scarlet total (not counting the BG Micro gearmotors,
which I got in trade from Lee Golden). I would highly suggest building a
BEAMant. If you don't want to freeform or make your own PCBs, Justin sells
them plain, or prepopulated. It is definitely a great little circuit!
BTW, Scarlet won a beautiful plaque and a micro controller starter kit from
the prize table. I found it a little ironic that an analog bot won a micro
controller from a contest that was dominated by micro controller based bots
(Scarlet was the only analog entry). What do you think of that Mark T.?
See ya,
Jim
