"First off, what are the letters D, G and S abbreviations of? (I have a hunch
that they may be Danish abbreviations). And further, would it be correct to
refer to one of these as the emitter pin of the component?"
This may not be the most help, and it's been a while since I used these
transistors, so if anybody else would like to put their 2CENTs in be my
guest. But D, G, & S stand for Drain, Gate, & Source. You could refer to the
Drain as the Collector, Gate as the Base, and Source as the Emitter...They
are most likely a JFET. Just as the bipolar junction transistor(BJT)has two
basic types (NPN or PNP) there are two types of Junction Field effect
transistors(JFET)called N-channel and P-channel. The N-channel JFET is
equivalent to an NPN BJT & the P-channel JFET is equivalent to a PNP BJT, but
I don't believe they can be substituted for each other...
The BJT is a CURRENT controlled device whereas the FET is a VOLTAGE
controlled device. The gate-source junction of a JFET is always REVERSE
biased since the input voltage is normally 0Volts or some Negative voltage.
