Mine too as of now. Can't help but recall Glotis in 'Grim Fandango': "Don't
tear out heart! Heart is good! Heart is good!"

I think everyone goes thru... I know, solarollers and
things don't seem very interesting, everyone wants to
move right on to making walkers and the most advanced
things they can... although it may be possible to
make a walker as your first bot, I think that you
should start out with simple stuff and then LEARN
about bigger stuff, then build big stuff. If you
build a walker, you might not want to build things
that are simpler, and thus might never really use
solarengines.... I, for example, have been learning
about BEAM for about 3 years, and building things for
about half that... I have made about 5 or 6 carbots, 2
photopoppers, and a few solarollers... but I still
haven't built a walker! I personally think you can
learn more by working your way UP not starting UP...
just my 2 cents worth...

9620 Sat, 29 Jan 2000 10:38:05 EST [alt-beam] Newbie question beam@sgiblab.sgi.com "Matthew Karas" I bought an amount of 74AC240's to build the "almost complete walker" on
Beam-Online. I believe that this is made out of two bicores. My question
is, is it possible to make a microcore out of the 240 instead of the 14? I
know thier both inverter chips, but will the lack of a schmitt trigger
change anything? I don't want to make another order if I don't have to.
I appreciate the help in advance.
Matt
PS...I apologize if that was a stupid question.

the "almost compleate walker circuit" cap and resistor values are optimized
for a 74HCT240.
you can use an HC or AC but you will havta change resistor settings.

The hemicore circuit is best suited for that...I
originally found the circuit at www.adaptobotics.com
(I think that is the site). It's just a more advanced
master-slave bicore that relies on sensor input for
the hysterisis pins on the HC140 (pins 1 and 19).

I doubt it will work, Matt. You need two things to make a microcore work
reliably: a Schmitt trigger (e.g., 74..14) AND a MOS or CMOS chip
(..HC.. or ..HCT..). The 74HC14 meets these requirements, as does the
MC14584B that Mark Tilden used in his original patent application.

Bruce

Can anyone tell me some general guidelines (like the above)
for figuring out what a chip does by its number?
Thanks,
Dave

9625 Sun, 30 Jan 2000 08:31:05 -0800 (PST) [alt-beam] Bicore question beam@sgiblab.sgi.com Max Inggal Ok I'm feed up with trying to make a Microcore walker.
Ao I've turned to the bicore. I breadboarded it and
it work first shot. My question is where would I put
a tactile sensor on it to make it reverse or turn?

What is the difference between a microcore and a Bicore? They do the same t=
hing, right? And could you post a schematic of the microcore.
Help would be appreciated greatly.
Thanks

Thanks what I'm screaming! I've made two m/s bicore walkers, and decided to
go to the microcore. I thought it would act more along the lines of what I
wanted it to do.
I breadboard it, and it works fine. I solder it all together, and it
refuses to work. I've checked all my solder joints, and made sure
everything's touching where it should, but I still can't manage a working
model. All I'm left with now, is perhaps that I ruined the chip with heat.
Are the 14's more sensitive than the 240's? I'm using one of those
universal PCB's, and I soldered all the pins of the 14 at once. Is that a
problem? I haven't had a problem doing it that way with 240's and 245's, so
I figured I could get away with it.
Any suggestions?
