Unlike the 7 segment numerical LCDs used for name tags, direct drive of
graphic panels requires complex multilevel drive signals. The LCD driver
chips normally used need high speed refresh. Some panels have an intelligent
controller that takes care of the refresh but have a complex protocol for
addressing and sending data to the screen. With the exception of VGA input
types, all graphic LCD panels require a microprocessor or equal for control.
However it may be possible to control ASCII character LCD panels directly
from beam type circuits since it is also possible to operate one from
switches and a couple of monostables for chip select and write signals.

9551 Wed, 26 Jan 2000 14:15:18 -0800 (PST) [alt-beam] Simthsonian Article beam@sgiblab.sgi.com Max Inggal Just a quick question for all of youi guys who have
seen the Mark Tilden article in the Feb 2000 edition
of Simthsonian Magazine. On the first part of the
article with the picture of Unibug 1.0 I think walking
on the sand is it just me or does the hind motor of it
look like a Nihon Mini motor?? Also I really do
suggest any and everyone to get that magazine since
there hasn't been any good shows out there on BEAM
lately. It's a good 12 page article with pics of
Roswell, Stryder, Spyder, and a bunch of his other
bots. Go check it out.

you have to supply your own pwr supply and controller and techno wizardry
but thanx though!
