Sure Sparky,
it is possible ... just build a decoder and a driver ... it could easy cost
5 - 10 times more than what is available commercially... But apart form a
costly parts list it is not all that hard to build... just think of it as a
"name tag" on a grand scale that is continually reprogrammed... ;)

(about 2 bucks) I can buy one of those that goes on a
TV remote, you could take it apart and look at the
circuit.

the bit in blue is the oscillator. Change the 100K for 5.6M for generating a
square wave and adjust the 3.9M and 3.3uf cap for frequency (2M and 0.33uf).
Works down to 2V.

cheapest you can get it for is $150. i was hoping for a little bigger
screen and spending about that much. hence, convert an old laptop screen.
but i guess you have to build a power supply, a driver, and watever else.
