No, they can be whatever you like. If you are using electrolytic, then make
sure the + end is attached to the base of the PNP transistor.
If you have some smaller caps (so long as they are equal to or above 0.1 uF)
then they should work as well. I'm thinking here of some 0.22 uF ceramic
caps you may have lying around waiting for a microcore to put them in.

Sure - so long as the gain is reasonably high. (200 or higher). This is
the hFE value given in the spec sheets.

You said that the circuit worked on the breadboard, so your transistors
should be fine.

If you do decide to experiment around with various transistors, breadboard
the circuit first to make sure that it works. You only need to breadboard
one side of the circuit, though.
