Typically a motor (whether AC or DC) uses iron stampings in the rotor.
These stampings form the magnetic core for the armature & support the
windings. While the iron core helps in concentrating the magnetic flux
where it is needed (poles), it also adds to the weight. A coreless
motor uses self supporting copper windings in the rotor. They use
special winding machines to wind these in a highly symmetric manner so
that the rotors are well balanced & the windings create magnetic poles
where they are needed by the motor design. As it is only the copper
wire (with some kind of binding, glue etc.) now forming the rotor, it is
relatively delicate.

For the reasons above this will be very difficult.

9036 Tue, 11 Jan 2000 12:04:12 -0500 [alt-beam] motors... beam@sgiblab.sgi.com Jonathan D Rogers All this talk of motors reminds me.
I read about this very small kind of motor they use in camera lenses, the
piezoelectric ultrasonic motor. I saw a picture of it, and it was indeed
extremely tiny...
So, what I was wondering is if anyone sells thses commerically, and if
so, would they be suitable for making REALLY small BEAM robots? I mean,
they look like they use very little energy, so they'd run great off a
solarengine, no doubt.

Another question:
Would one of those modified motors I was talking about work OK for say, a
walker? They're got lots of torque, so I was thinking they'd be perfect
for it. Mondotronics carries a few.

If they're piezoelectric, I doubt they'd run off a solarengine. No problems
with voltage or current, but the solarengine requires an inductive load
(like a pager motor, coil, or speaker), doesn't it?

Peace out!
