Subject: [alt-beam] Photovore parts

Hey, I'm about to build my first photovore, and I wanted to compliment
Chiu-Yuan Fang on his excellent BEAM site, especially the section on
building a free-form photovore.
I assume he's on this mailing list...
Anyway, it's been very helpful and I love the free-form design. Very
cool.
Does anyone have any suggestions on how to mount those cool touch sensor
feeler things that Solarbotics sells to the design? I mean, it looks like
you could glue them to the cap...but they're not in the circuit...

Jonathan

I got mine from the insides of a solar-powered light meter that I picked up
from Dick Smith. I just had a look at the catalog, and it appears that the
item isn't for sale anymore.

But you can get the same thing minus the solar panel for about the same
price - Dick Smith part # Q 2100 - Level Meter - $12.65.

Page 189 of the 1999 - 2000 catalog.

It's just your normal meter thingy that you find on audio panels, voltage
sensors, analog multimeters, etc. You can probably find a couple in your
local Cash Converters, living inside a light meter or old cassette recorder
etc.

The way it works is that you have a fixed permanent magnet, and a moving
coil. The coil is attached to the fixed part via springs, which also allow
current to pass through them.

A word of warning - DON'T attempt to pull the coil assembly apart. The
springs are very easily damaged. I went through two of them before my
dragonfly was working properly.

See the attached jpeg. Unfortunately I don't have my dragonfly with me,
otherwise I'd take another photo of the coil for you. This is from the Dick
Smith site.
