Depends on the gearmotor you use. The J works fine with a BG Micro. The only
difference is the voltage level going to the motor when it fires. Actually, a
J will make your head more active.

The D1, by the books, really should not work at all (if you read the spec sheets
for the 2N7000.

I used a circuit that is both simpler and works very reliably, built from stuff
you
can find at your local radio shack.

All you need is a NPN phototransistor, a PNP transistor, and a 5.1K resisitor.
