Subject: [alt-beam] College Experiment (was: Lets Hypothesise...)

Speaking of aural directionality, I was involved in an experiment in
college many moons ago. I (along with others) sat in a chair in front of
an ordinary stereo setup. Precisely the same pulse of tone was sent to
both speakers: the only variable being the relative loudness (that is, one
speaker would have the tone louder than the other). Surprisingly enough,
even WITHOUT the time-of-flight one normally gets because our ears are
usually at different distances from most things we can locate, there was
still the perception that the tone was coming from different directions.

I guess it is a kind of a visual illusion for the ears. Nearly everyone
reported the same results.
