The common mine is set of by pressure... They are about 2.5 inches in
diameter and 1 inch tall ... they contain a pressure switch that becomes
live after deployment(usually by aircraft)... only takes ~2.5 pounds of
pressure to set them off... so going over the top of them with a detector
doesn't apply any pressure...

And yes some do go off due to heavy rain, hail, or just cold...
