Subject: [alt-beam] Surface mount tutorial

Hie all.....

I wrote in to ask anyone if there is any info he/she could give me or in
the internet about surface mount components..i really would like to try to
build small stuff....like for a resistor or capacitor...how do they
determine the value...cause all i see in my wrecked PCB...there are only
colors no numbers at all...anyone who has a list of the colors with the
values....thanks a lot...and what type of soldering iron do i need....

Hi,

I was wondering where to !get! surface mounted components. I'm also into
the "the-smaller-the-better" dept.

Cheers,

Thomas

Forgive my newbiness, I am just getting into this....

Would running transistors in parallel effectively lower the voltage drop
across the transistors that run the motors? The reason I am asking is that
for the speed controls in the electric model airplanes I build/fly the
designers use multiple FETs in parallel to lower the effective resistance.
I was wondering if this principal might be applicable/useful to these little
robots to give them just a little more oomph.

BONUS QUESTION:

Does anyone know of any BEAM/Robotics events/contests/get-togethers that
happen in the Calgary, Alberta, Canada area?

Craig

As far as the soldering iron goes, If you already have a good one, you are
set. I would however, suggest you get a small tip for it. It will help you
out greatly. As for the colors, good luck. Our company builds
spectrophotometers and cooled CCD cameras from the ground up. We do 99% of
our boards with SM parts. There are many manufacturers of these components,
and they don't all use the same colors, esp. caps. I would suggest, to just
measure them. The resistors should all have some sort of numbering depicting
the value.
