lasers can be focused to a very small spot. That is what makes lasers so
dangerous as anyone should know who has ever used a magnifying lens to
concentrate sun light. There are some ultra bright LEDs which can also be
focused on a nearby "target" and are safe to use. Actually it is better to
mount a broad beam "flood" LED on the head which illuminates a reflective
object (like a hand) causing the head to try to center the light on the
object and track the object when it moves. A combination of a IR flood LED
and a focused red LED in the center gives the best effect.

a Tektronix type 316 at a yard sale. Thanks for any help. :)

laser pointers are pretty safe. Here in Australia, they're regulated to
about 1 mW, which to do damage would mean that you would have to stare
into the beam for over 15 minutes.

I have a 5mW laser pointer which is now illegal to sell in Australia,
because it can do damage to your retina if you stare into the beam for a
sustained period of time.

My friend has a 10 mW pointer, which I wouldn't look into.

I put a laser pointer on another friend's Playstaion gun, to aim the gun
when playing various games. This hasn't resulted in any damage, because
of the low wattage (1mW).

I wouldn't be too worried by this. If you're concerned, then lower the
output strength (There's usally a little pot on the circuit board).

Just make sure its a 1 mW pointer.

7087 Tue, 26 Oct 1999 00:48:27 EDT [alt-beam] BEAM Screen Saver beam@sgiblab.sgi.com "Rik Marshall" since im a multimedia designer .... i figured i would ask how many of you
out there would be interested in a BEAM screen saver? ...

of course it would be free of charge!!!

im thinking ....everyone send in 1pic of their favorite bot ...and then i'll
make a screen saver!

anyone interested???

** please dont send pics yet...im just putting the idea out there...i'll let
ya know what the response is..and when to send me the pics! **

Would you mind repeating that.....perhaps in another language :)
