As a matter of fact back in 97, I finished a project I always dreamed of :
design and build an updated version of the ZX81/TS1000. After discussions
with others on the ZX81 list server, the ZX97 was born which is now a nice
little controller which can run basic control programs from power up. It is
backward compatible with the ZX81, still B/W but now includes a 512K
nonvolatile RAMDISK, lot's of graphics modes and plenty of I/O. Implemented
with CMOS Z80, memory chips and 18 other 74HC chips, the power supply
current is a cool 40mA at 6V which makes it possible to run off solar power!
It typically sits on my workbench showing off the carousel of pictures in
RAMDISK of my family and the dog in glorious B/W with awesome (well at least
recognizable face wise) 256x192 resolution. Now if only my beam bots could
see the world as well as my ZX97. Ok I guess I'll just have to design a
ZXcore.

enjoy
