Drawing maps on paper of all the rooms in an old video game, often
taping sheets together cause a map is so big. Some games were text
based, some were graphic, far different than what we got today. Many
games today have in game maps now, and that defeats most of the purpose
of a hand draw map, but nothing beats a hand drawn map for some games.
Graphics have become more important than gameplay and size in some
games. You'll find decent modern games though, but so much is dedicated
to grapics. I think the next generation of consoles will help. they have
the memory and storage for 3D as well as large game areas. hopefuly RPGs
will be large once again, like they once were. Right now I've been
playing several SNES RPGs. They sure don't makem like they used to!
