well, I saw one design on some guys page (part of the Electrical
engineering webring, i think) that used a cheap compass whose N side of
the needle was shiny. Thy the had a a series of emitter/detector pairs (10
or 12 I think) arrayed in such a way as to "see" the pin.
not very accurate, but it beats 80 bucks.
