hmmm. not BEAM,
but its a bot.

saw this new bot in the new catalog
looks like a clone of CRICKET
but only half the cost.
(no infra red)
heres the text:
Get moving with this articulated mechanical moving bug. Six legs driven by
three servo motors provide directional mobility. Front mounted LEDs look
cool in the dark and two touch feelers provide obsticle detection input.
Onboard Stamp 1.4 microcontroller is reprogrammable in BASIC blah blah blah

Ah, now there's a controversial one. There was quite a debate back when
I studied Kinesiology about whether or not humans used a "motor program"
to move. The proponents used the insect studies to bolster their case;
the opponents argued that there was feedback from the sensory nerves in
the joints and muscles.

Your point is valid -- we don't think about individual movements of all
our muscles (unless we've suffered neurological damage); but we DID
think about it when we first learned to walk.

Really, though, there's two different issues here. Some insects don't
use feedback to fine tune their move, while humans and other mammals
might. The other issue is how the different creatures "got" that way.
Humans, and many other mammals go through a learning phase, but do
insects? Probably not. Do BEAM critters go through a learning phase?
Wouldn't touch that one with a 3 metre pole .

Bruce

You might want to look at Steve Bolt's page on using sound to control
his spider robot:

Evening all,

Recently, I've been giving some thought to adding a BEAM Rogues Gallery to =
the (n)CORE. In this gallery would be bios, photos, email addresses, ICQ n=
umbers, URLs, etc. of BEAMers around the world. The thread tonight tells m=
e that we should do this. I'll have a page just for that added to the 'zin=
e tomorrow. Just email me all the info you want published and I'll get it =
in. This includes all newbies and lurkers.
