You might consider some kind of low voltage cutoff so you avoid
draining the rechargeable batteries completely. If two nicad cells are
not perfectly matched one cell might reverse polarity and cease to
exist ;-)
Craig Maynards "Chloroplast" engine would suitable for the purpose
(might need some modification though - I'm not an electronics whizz)
The 1381 could also be used or even a zenerdiode and a transistor
