Normally a pager motor or similar doesn't have enough torque to get the
roller moving when the output wheel is directly glued onto the shaft.
There are a couple of ways around this:

1.
Use gearing. This method provides a low-friction alternative, but is
heavier and more expensive than...

2.
Use the motor shaft to 'rub' on the outside of a wheel. This method is
cheap, light, but can sometimes result in large amounts of friction unless
the setup is EXACTLY right. By this I mean it is difficult to strike a
balance between the wheel being driven by the shaft, and excessive
friction. You can put a rubber sleeve on the shaft of the motor to give
higher gearing and better grip. I have done this on my (non-BEAM) easter
egg hunter.

Hope this helps!

Hi there gang ...

first off i wanna say i am new to all this...my parts are on the way..and
hopefully soon i will have some pics to post and join the web ring!

i'd also like to take the time to thank JIM and IVAR for ALL YOUR HELP! and
for answering all my newbie questions!!! .. i really can't thank these guys
enough..oh yea and steve too for helping me get some great motors CHEAP!!!

well i'll start off with an easy question ....

i noticed on the solarbotics site under the solar roller gallery that alot
of these use gearing to run the wheels...
is there any benefit to this over a direct wheel drive? .. or is it simply a
matter of preference?

THANKS for the input!

Rik

different people, there are three basic differences between you and Tilden:

1) to the best of my ability to perceive, you are being more productive
than he is
2) you aren't getting paid for BEAM research.
3) you document your work.

With the possible exception of the documentation bit, this isn't meant to
complain about Tilden as much as it is to offer praise for your unflagging
efforts.

Unless if you build your solaroller EXTREMELY LIGHT, a motor will not be
able to direct-drive the drivewheel. Especially not if the wheel is large.

But that isn't entirely true - if you can find a larger, "pancake"-type
motor, these have large amounts of torque that are able to turn wheels
pretty decently.

Gears are usually used to move the motor out of the way of the wheels and
provide gearing down, so they can trade off some speed for torque. It makes
the solaroller (technically) slower, but it will have more power to be able
to move the solaroller.

Think of it like being in a car with a manual transmission. You can't start
moving in 4th gear, right? You need more torque to get rolling, i.e.: 1st gear.

Regards,
Dave

Well done. Slam Tilden while praising Wilf in one short paragraph.

Ok this letter is kinda directed toward Mr. T but you
guys can read it too. I know that Mr. T has been
testing his bots in extremely hot and airid regions
ofthe earth. But what about the other types of
environments like Hot humid areas, or Frozen waste
lands?? Hot and dry isn't the only environment out
there you guys really got to start expanding your
views.
