Subject: [alt-beam] Trial and error the beam evolution


The title sums most of this up. We are the evolvers behind our robots if
something does not work we do not persue it simply. New ideas are products
of the imagination, successful ideas are used again then continue to evolve
into something better. So therefore the more knowledge we have the better
and more successful we become at building. Who has the most experience?
well Mark T of course he founded BEAM after all.

They have a free downloadable CAD program (approx 4.5 Meg). They
naturally hope you will design your PCB with it and then order the
board(s) from them.

6410 Tue, 05 Oct 1999 18:11:45 PDT [alt-beam] Springs vs. Stops beam@sgiblab.sgi.com "grant mckee" This refers almost entirely to walkers specifically the two motor variety.
I have knowticed that on a standard two motor walker that the front legs
tend to stay "in gait" by themselves due to gravity pulling the legs strait
again. however the back legs due to their angle tend to go where ever they
want causing the walker (none to gracefully) to fall on its side, now either
you can put in complicated electronics or fairly simple mechanics to keep
your walker up. I usually use springs or a MIG welder liner (basically a
spring; rather abundant where I am) to center the back legs or stops to
prevent the legs from turing to far.

So far the only advantages to stops that I can see is that the legs are more
free to move, slightly cheaper more chaotic. Disadvantages being that
jarring the gearchain of your motors must wear them out faster.

Springs on the other hand have a smoother motion to them and are more of a
constant force. The only disadvantage being that they will wear out faster
than stops

Springs or stops? guess it depends on the situation.
