Subject: [alt-beam] Protecting solarcells egdes

Hie all,

I would like to know how u protect the edges of your solarcell....i mean how
u do it and with what and whats the purpose of doing it......another thing
is....for all u beamers who have build a walker before (wilf, dennison, bruce
robinson, ian ,etc etc) could u let me know whats the best way to make a
walkers leg which can make the walker walk the way it is suppose to...like
knowing the CG of the bot andother stuff...i hope u could say in detail how
i could make better ones....i can sstart out with gumby legs(thanks ian for
sending me that sample of yours)....thanks for all of u who is going to
reply

i would like to know if anyone would help me to tape two of this
programme...i will pay them back,...just state out the price of the tapes
and the shipping fee..thanks

Latest news: Mark Tilden BEAM-NIGHT on PBS. On October 18, there will be two
separate shows featuring BEAM.

The first is on Scientific American Frontiers with Alan
Alda featuring an interview with Mark Tilden. (The website says Oct 5 & Nov
2 8-9pm, but Mark T. says different!)

The second is a special called On the BEAM, featuring the
1997/8 BEAM team from Pojoque, New
Mexico, who went to the India BEAM games. They share their
experiences in this 1 hour special!

Hie all,

Dont u all ever wonder why mark's new walkers are so different...as in as u
can notice there are two big caps on those battery powered ones which is a
weird sight and the particularly small PCB which i dont think can fit a chip
not even a surface mount and another thing is there are several ( 6 or more)
similar PCB whic i think is a bicore to control a two motor walker? isnt
that strange...just would like to know your opinion...thanks

Yep...there are some ones that are 40:1 ratio for only $20 at resources
unlimite..they do adds in Popular electronics...and there are some very nice
1024:1 ration motors that i was the only one to get 2 of them...they are all
gone now..anyone got a good offer for those?

its just to protect the edges from chipping. besides, the hot glue becomes
silicon-like when it hardens :P allows for more rugged use

Hi all,

Dont u guys ever have a curiousity on how Mr.mark tilden first walker
,photovore and turbot look like and how he did the first ever brain and
mechanix of the first eve walker..how he did it and how he think about
it.....i would just like to know from people who stays near him like
dave, ian, zoz, etc etc whether do they have the pictures of his first walker
or can he try to get it for us to give us the right idea to beginners how to
start his hobby and customizing his stuff while going up.......just would
like to ask anyone out there who has info and pictures of his first bots or
not...walkers etc etc..

thanks a lot(everyone please contribute an idea about this topic)

Well...there's several approaches that I've seen. If you look at the Cybug
Scorpion kit on my site, you can see wire frames that encompass the exposed
edges of the cell. I first saw this technique used by Mark T. Another way is
to laminate the cell to a piece of plastic or brass slightly larger than the
cell itself. I think Bob Shannon came up with that one. You can also simply
coat the edges with epoxy or tape covered with epoxy as I did with Byte. The
reason is kinda obvious, to protect those sharp, brittle glass edges.

Good observation. He uses them to "cushion" the lithium / Nickel Metal
Hydride batteries to that the electronics can pull as much juice as they
need from the power source. If it's just the batteries alone, these sudden
demands for power could cause a voltage drop sufficient enough to put a
glitch in the system.

Ooohhh yes they can! They're VERY TINY SMT.

Fixed. Sorry!

BECAUSE IT'S EASIER WITH A PICTURE. The legs have to be balanced and
aligned correctly. Give me a chance to at least do a PDF of that page this
weekend.

First one I recall him building is either SPYDER or Turtle. I have pics of
spyder online, but none of Turtle (yet). It's the one on all the BEAM
t-shirts and posters. And the one on the cover of the "Living Machines" paper.

>photovore

That too I have a picture of that isn't online. Very large and clunky. Also
in the BEAM rulebook too.

> and turbot

Ditto for this as well. Looks like I'll put this msg in the
"website-additions" folder...

6341 Sun, 3 Oct 1999 17:42:14 +0800 [alt-beam] Head+walker "BEAM" "Zulu" hi all

got a question on a solar walker...

from what i know, a walker can be designed to go forward, reverse, turn,
and climb small obstacles. a head seeks out the brightest light source.

now... thow are the 2 combined to make the walker phototopic? one method i
thought of is to build a head, then build the driving motor (usually the
rear) for the walker onto the head. thus when the head turns, the driving
motor for the walker turns too. however, this design would require 4 motors
(one for the front, one for turning, one for drive and another for the
head, i think :P). Far too many, considering that small Geared Motors are a
rarity here.

is there any other methods to build such walkers?? maybe by combining the
Head circuit in such a way that the inputs to the motors can be used to
affect the walker circuit somehow, or anything like that.....

can anyone help? thanks in advance

rdgs
Zulu

P.s: I've seen the Light Walker by Mr Rigter.what i cant get is..... it
uses only 2 motors... then how does it turn?
