I suspect it might be cheaper to buy XVracers than the caps. I haven't
been able to compare them to anything as big as a 1F cap, but some crude
indications suggest they might be 2F or over. Since the whole set is
cheaper than a 1F cap, Mattel are probably getting some serious bulk
discount on them - something we wouldn't get from a vendor. Furthermore,
XV racers can be up to half the price of 1F cap if you get them in a
good sale, and discounted XV racers are much more common than discounted
caps :-)
Still, finding someone at Mattell sounds like a good idea if we could
pull it off, though I doubt it would take the price below an XV racer on
a post Xmas sale :-)
It's a pity the XV racer motors are such crap, still, the gears are nice
(crown gears don't come in the assorted gear packs that I buy)

one question.. for the Z bridge, will it be alright to use a 74HC139P ?
