Yes, this has already been discovered. It's been used on some walkers
wih great success too. Check out
http://www.seattlerobotics.org/guide/infrared.html
for more info on implementing this. It's pretty easy. Someone on this
list posted a message a long way back reporting his sucesses/problems
with it. Try searching the archives for IR.

On another note, that's pretty awesome that you figured that out
yourself!
