well, i was at the bookstore going through some
circuit encyclopedias looking for a chirp generator
(another story... can't find a piezeo-type chirper
that werks) and i came across this little schematic
of an IR (InfraRed)detector. When the IR is detected
the LED is lit. But only for the amount of time that
IR is detected.
NOW....
I was thinkin, (and please excuze if this is laughable
and already been mentioned a thousand times.. just sharin
an idea here!) the LED could be looked at as a "switch"
that finally connects like say uhhh er ummmm.... a reverser
...like yur tactile sensor.

now i don't know about you guys (and gals?) but the solder
on my little springs on my bot's feelers keep getting
knocked off due to heavy hits on the wall (speedy little
guy) but i digress...

soo what i'm saying is:
1. have somethin that transmitts
a well defined IR beam. don't know if there are LEDs that
do this, but i do know that Radio Shack carries some IR
modules (i have no idea what they do either)
2. this beam is shot out at an angle (dwnward) .
3. when a wall or obsticle is encountered the wall bends
the beam at a sharper angle, hitting the IR detector which
triggers the reverser (same way it would trigger the LED)

so, beam is shot out at an angle, wall or object bends the
angle to hit the detector.
(now why didn't i just say that to start with?)
angle and detector can be adjusted to determine distance
that obsticle is to be avoided.
I'm not sure, but i don't think the surface to be avoided
needs to be THAT reflective either... but probaly depends
on the IR beam. (ya know those little keychain laser pointers
come to mind! ...but thats not IR now, is it?) i dunno.
thats for the techno gurus to figure out.

I attached the schematic of the detector, i also included a
CRUDE diagram at the top of the graphic to show what i meant.

I've been playing with using the 2N7000 as a E-field sensor. I took a stab=
at one of (The Amazing) Wilf's circuits this morning, but went back to the=
simpler one tonight. I am planning on building a photopopper that is both=
(+)phototropic and (+)e-fieldtropic. I think that it would be a good pred=
etor-type popper, because it should be attracted to 'charged' poppers. Or =
maybe a soccer team thing. Who knows? I have to prove this sensor first. =
It's a lot of fun! =
