This certainly works, Wilf, but don't put these designs on a vechicle
with all the wheels parallel to each other -- your machine will drift
sideways at the first opportunity if you do.

I once saw a design (somewhere on the net) of an actual vehicle using a
variation of this design. The segment wheels were turned at 45 degrees
to the plane of the main wheel, instead of at 90 degrees as your are.
The wheels were mirror-imaged on both sides of the vehicle.

In linear, straight ahead motion, the segment wheels wouldn't be able to
turn without skidding, since they would be trying to roll at 90 degrees
to each other. If the main wheels on one side of the vehicle were locked
or slowed down, the segment wheels would be able to roll to reduce
friction. Sort of like a skid-steer tractor, without the skid.

Love that mechanical stuff.

Bruce

Just place a magnet to the metal rod of the screwdriver. This will magnetize
the screwdriver and if you remove the magnet again you have your normal
screwdriver back again.

That have to be de-magnetized it.

Of all the BEAM robots I've ever seen, very very few used an innovative form
of
motion. I dont agree that many different things have been tried (with BEAM
designs).

I actually had 3 totally different designs, and spent more than 2 weeks just
trying to
decide which to complete and submit for the contest. (Almost everyone I
asked thought
that I sould have submitted a design called 'Snake Spring Drive' rather than
LEM!)

Not having a digital camera with video is not a problem at all. I dont have
one. Chiu offered to digitize video from standard VHS tapes. How much
easier
could it be?

With so few contestants, I worry that there wont be any future contests.
