If you don't have a clue what the current you're going to measure is,
start with the biggest range. Get an idea of what the current actually
is, and then work down.

The same principle applies to voltage -- start high and then work your
way down. As Ian said, the smaller the range you can use, the more
precise the reading.

Following this practice will save your meter someday.
