I don't know if this got through the first time - I still was sending to
beam@spindle, not beam@sgiblab. Who thinks of these names? Anyway, here it
is. Sorry if you receive it twice.
I have been playing around with IR wall sensing, and came up with the
attached circuit.
It detects my hand at a distance of about 30 cm, and a white door at about
80 cm. It seems to be a pretty good little wall sensor - and the component
count is pretty low for a device like this.
I used a U60 IR sensor, which has a filter built in. It works really,
really well. I can shine my stereo remote control at it, THROUGH my hand,
and it still picks up the signal. Not bad at all.
The U60 is Dick Smith part number: Z1955 and costs A$5.95 each.
So for a total wall sensing circuit, you're looking at around A$10. This
translates to about $6.50 US.
You can use the IR sensors in computer mice, but their detection range is
about a centimeter. Good for cliff sensors, but not much else.
As Wilf would say:
Enjoy!

from an object 30Cm and 80 ! cm away is not good. I would like the 1 cm
detector anyway. Can you post the circut. ? I am creating a RoboCar and an IR
Sensor would be alot better than Photodiodes (Which I still haven't found) on
photo transistors.
