Subject: [alt-beam] Re: Cleaning SOlder FLux
I use Isopropyl Alcohol & an old tooth brush to scrub off the flux.
Then follow it up with a wash of clean water. The second step is not
always needed. You will have to thoroughly dry it if you use water.
Watch for any components that can be affected by IPA - some plastics &
markings/painted surfaces are prone to this.
If you have access to a logic probe & a pulser (suitable for the logic
family - TTL/CMOS), checking single (& even multiple) chips is easy to
do. There are schematics for simple pulser & probes on the web that
should work well with the chips & speeds used in BEAM. Radio Shack
logic probes are sometimes on sale for about 10 - 12 dollars.
You apply power to the circuit then pulse the inputs (with pulser) and
watch the outputs (with probe). Refer to the logic tables when you are
doing this & any discrepancy should point to the fault. This is a
simplistic description of the process but you will be surprised to see
how even relatively complex circuits can be debugged with this technique
when used cleverly.
