You're just BRUTAL to those poor things!!! The tip don't melt away. it's
things like flux and oxidation that eat it away chemicaly. I recomend
paying the few extra cents for iron clad tips instead of copper. They
lats a whole lot longer. Also, you NEED to have a wet sponge (or cloth
for that matter) to clean the tip. When ever you would normaly set it
down, just quickly wipe the tip over the sponge. It cleans the residue
off the iron's tip. if it's smoking, the tip isn't clean.

Melting through power cords doesn't count though. That's just kinda
careless. always run the cord out of the way. I may have a nick now an
then, but I've never burned through any of the 7 soldering irons I've
had in the past 9 years. And yes, a good soldering iron should last well
over a year if treated right. Heck, I didn't start treating them right
till I got into my "Soldering and Mechanical Connections" class here at school.

Another tip, try to give them a break avery 1 or 2 hours. It ain't good
to go on an 5 hour solder spree! My very first soldering iron died that
way, but the handle made a nice smoke stack for a model oil refinery! (:
