These are specialized parts that you won't find at garden-variety
electronics places; nor in things like walkmans. You can order them from
Solarbotics (www.solarbotics.com) or Digi-Key (www.digi-key.com)

They won't work the same if that's what you mean. By all means
plug them in to see what they do, but the part listed for the photovore is
a photo_DIODE_ and you bought a photo_TRANSISTOR_. Diodes and
transistors are not the same.

Photodiodes might be found in walkmans or disk drives (the sensor
to detect write-protect or cassette loaded).. or are those more commonly
phototransistors? Anyone?

These are all fine.

You can use at least 8-10 photodiodes linked together to act like
a solarcell, but if you're having trouble finding photodiodes in the first
place, that won't help you.

If you have .45V solarcells, you will need 6-7 or so of them in
series to give you at least 3 volts.

Very good solar cells can be found at Solarbotics.
(www.solarbotics.com) Not sure where else you'd get some, unless there is
a surplus place around near you that may have something solarpowered you
could take the cell off of.
