I can't help with your main question, but should inform you that 2n3904
transistors are ~$0.16 @ through digikey (www.digikey.com), and I'd wager ICs
might be cheaper there too. Handling's free if you spend more than $25 bucks,
and the stuff usually arrives within 3-4 days.

What are you looking for re soldering iron feedback?
