That's an even better idea than my "vertical wall" arrangement. It
allows the attracting combination of poles to be much further apart than
the repulsing combination, and is less dependent on uniform
arrangements.

In effect, you're simulating a monopole magnet by getting one set of
poles out of the way. Of course, if a robot manages to flip over on its
back ...
