They were Mattel "Sizzlers", that used a small N-sized nicad. They've
recently be resurrected by "Playing Mantis" toys, and are much the same.
The motor really stinks - it's one of those rectangular, open motors that
are very inexpensive (and really inefficient).

But that isn't to say you couldn't retrofit it into something much better!
As a matter of fact, Mattel now has "XV Racers", which are the same sort of
thing as the sizzlers, but with what I _think_ is a 10F AL Gold cap for
power storage.
