There has been talk of fancy topologies before, but things never
got very far, neither in practice nor theory. Of course interesting
discoveries are always just around the corner...

It's something you'd have to deal with in theory first, though.
Then you do design, followed by experiment. Simply trying complex
topologies would very likely result in massive waste of time.
