The SE is a great idea. It has been implemented pretty well by Ken
Huntington (Micropower SE), Andrew Miller and others.

I'm sure that Dave's kits will work just fine. I've scratch-built
one with little trouble; no doubt others can do the same. But if
you are new to electronics, lack tools like a good scope, and you
aren't very lucky when obtaining your motor, solar panel and fled...
