Actually, I think laser cannons can be traced back to the sci-fi serials of
the 40's and 50's. Buck Rogers had it used on him by Ming the Mercilus. The
truth is there is nothing new under the sun as far as concepts go in the
entertainment field. The trick is to combine known technologies in a novel
way. Lucas excels at that.
