Subject: [alt-beam] Re(2): Mark Tilden on TV

I've just received a very serious bit of nonsense via email (with regard to
copying the show recently aired that contains footage of Mark Tilden).
Obviously, some people do NOT have a clue what copyright means.

:umm, making a copy, then giving it to someone is not illegal. It becomes
:illegal when you start charging money for it...

Wrong-o. The creator of a work owns the "COPYRIGHT" (even if they don't
register it officially) which means that you are not allowed to make a COPY
of their work without getting their permission (with certain extremely
limited exceptions).

| It doesn't matter whether you charge money for the copy or not. |

I STRONGLY suggest that you consult United States Code 17 & CFR Title 37...
a quote from the former says:

:Section 106, Exclusive rights in copyrighted works
:Subject to sections 107 through 120, the owner of a copyright under
:this title has the exclusive rights to do and to authorize any of
:the following:
: (1)
: to reproduce the copyrighted work in copies or phonorecords;
: (2)
: to prepare derivative works based upon the copyrighted work;
: (3)
: to distribute copies or phonorecords of the copyrighted work
: to the public by sale or other transfer of ownership, or by
: rental, lease, or lending;

As this shows, among other things, you can't reproduce it nor give it away
nor even loan it out. If you find yourself utterly fascinated by the
subject, a typical source of information on the Web is:

Advertising that you want to get an ILLEGAL copy of something via the
Internet isn't the brightest thing to do, either, btw. For those of you
living in countries other than the U.S., I have no doubt there are similar
strong laws & furthermore there are international agreements concerning
this domain.
