Most timely! I was just pondering a similar concept for a BEAM sumobot I
wish to build for next year's WCRG, as I want to make my ex-R/C-champ "CAB"
autonomous. I think I'll just have to breadboard yours up first!

Speaking of the WCRG, we had a pretty decent turn out of BEAMers from Red
Deer, Montana, New Mexico (Ian - where's that BS2?!?), and British
Columbia. Although a good turnout, there was only 3 entries in the
Solaroller competition, which was won by Grant McKee of Red Deer (not of
New Mexico as listed on the website) who managed about 23cm before the 3
minutes of the event were up. 2nd place was Andri Ulrich (Galisteo, New
Mexico, USA), who's solaroller didn't quite manage to cross the _starting_
line (was way at the back to touch the shorting bars), and 3rd was won by
Doug Hoyte of British Columbia. His solaroller, although impressive
looking, didn't have the wattage to get moving, but he was entered, and did
manage to walk away with some prizes and gift certificates to Solarbotics Ltd.

We're going to be adjusting the solaroller rules for the future, by placing
one set of the lamps over the starting boxes, and the other set 2/3 the way
down. It should improve the indoor performance of the event.

There was 14(!) Fire-extinguisher robots, and considerably less R/C Sumo.
The event was moved up from the SAIT gym to the adjacent lounge, with great
results. There were 4 video cameras projecting information and competitions
on big screens all around the venue, and even a remote sumo-cam! Was pretty
cool...

For more details on how the WCRG turned out, check the website at

We are starting work on arranging a full Millenium BEAM games (B2K) to be
run in conjunction with WCRG next year. Not many details yet, but start
saving your plane fair now!

Regards,
Dave

"Um, no - that's H,R,Y,N,K,I,W. No, not K,I,U,U, K,I,_W_. Yes,
that's right. Yes, I know it looks like "HOCKYRINK." Yup, only
2 vowels. Pronounciation? _SMITH_".
