I'm pretty sure they were the right way around. Actually I wasn't using a 2906,
as Rat Shack (at least the one here) doesn't carry them. They do have boxes of
fifteen "2906-Type Transistors," for which the general list consensus was that
they should work anyway. I ordered some "real McCoy" parts from digikey as
specified on Beam Online (Thank you Beam Online hominid!), but haven't got
around to playing with them yet. I'll likely do that this weekend, and get back
to you with further questions if I have still problems.
