Going from a 9 volt cell down to 5 volts, even with a good low dropout
regulator is often much less efficient than using a small boost mode
switcher like those from Maxim, Linear Tech, and similar devices.

There are even inductor-less circuits that are excellent for BEAM use,
and
very efficient solarization.

But also remember that Sharp does make a 3.3 volt version of the IS1U60
series
detector, the only drawbacks may be in price and availability.

As 3.3 volts quickly replaces 5 volts, both of these will become less of
a factor with time.

I've got a .PDF file on-line a at work with the 3.3 volt detector info,
I'll try to dig that up for the list Monday.
