Subject: [alt-beam] Photopopper Circuit: 3906 needed?

Hey there Beamers.
After finally figuring out how transistors and SEs work, I looked at the
photopopper circuit and can't figure out what the 3906 is and resistor
are needed for.

Here is the circuit:

(Ian's sight is famous!)

I could see why they might be needed to latch, but doesn't the 1381 take
care of that? Or is it just there to help the 1381 turn the 3904 on? The
3906 doen't turn on untill the 3904 does though, right?

Thank you ;)
Kyle
